And why was the trade suspended? Brian's story is just one reason.
Brian was a big, affable steer, who was trying his best to keep out of trouble, which made it particularly hard to witness what he endured. He was confused, scared, but compliant. Regardless of his lack of resistance, he was surrounded by a number of workers and terrorised and brutalised as he bellowed loudly.
Brian did nothing to deserve being hit in the face, whipped or kicked. He lay there restrained and completely helpless, with each kick to the face he called out in a way that was heart wrenching.
Eventually, his fate was to be the same of so many other victims of live export; Brian's throat was cut whilst fully conscious and he died, 3000km from home.
